LOCAL ORGANISATIONS

 

ATHERSTONE CIVIC SOCIETY
Formed in 1990 to stimulate interest in, and action for, the improvement of the environment throughout the Atherstone area. By monitoring all planning applications for the area, and consulting with district councils: undertaking small environmental improvement projects; participating in forums which relate to environmental matters; speaking out for the environment and for our built heritage; joining with similar groups within the West Midlands in the amenity societies own federation, MASA; arranging talks and visits; raising funds for environmental projects.

ATHERSTONE NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Meetings 3rd Wednesday of the month, September to May- at Trinity Church, Coleshill Road, Atherstone. Visiting speakers cover a wide range of topics, most with slides. Walks in the summer season - May to July, mainly local.

FRIENDS OF ATHERSTONE HERITAGE

A registered charity which provides support for local heritage and the establishment of suitable "space" in which to display local heritage. The Friends have taken a two-year lease on White Hart House, Long Street, Atherstone (opposite the new Co-op).
The building itself has a long history as a pub and hotel serving the town and it is hoped that now that the original front door is open it will serve the town once more as a focus for local art, Heritage and Community activities.

TWYCROSS ZOO ASSOCIATION
Twycross Zoo opened to the public in 1963. Since its inception, the zoo has doubled in size and currently maintains about 200 species of animal. Famous for its Primate collection and breeding programmes, the zoo has been a registered charity since 1972.

The Twycross Zoo Association (T.Z.A.) was formed in 1972 and has the following aims:

  • To promote an interest in wildlife and its conservation.
  • To bring together people who are interested in animals.
  • To circulate news and information about zoos.
  • To support the work of Twycross Zoo and associated projects.

TWYCROSS HANDBELL RINGERS
A group of 11 ladies from the local area who practice weekly, at a house in Sheepy Magna, Atherstone. They ring for groups when asked particularly around Christmas. Practice is on Monday nights from 7.30pm to 9pm. If you are interested in joining...

ATHERSTONE MEMORIAL HALL
The 300 seat Memorial Hall in Atherstone serves as the Borough's major performance and function venue. Its primary purpose is to meet North Warwickshire's art and entertainment requirements, from opera to theatre, tea dances to comedy, and from mime to big band swing nights. As well as a varied entertainment programme, the Hall also offers a range of health and fitness classes and can be hired for exhibitions, business seminars and meetings, weddings, parties and similar functions. A versatile second hall, small meeting room, licensed bar and kitchen are also available for private bookings.

THE ARTS

 

ATHERSTONE CHORAL SOCIETY
Atherstone Choral Society formed 25 years ago and is now one of the finest and with over 100 singers is one of the largest mixed amateur choirs in the Midlands. The present Director, Lt. Col (Retd.) P.R. Evans first conducted the Society in 1987 in his capacity as Director of Music, Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers.
The Society's reputation and musical strength is gained from the very wide repertoire it performs, be it Bach to Beatles; ancient to modern; oratorios with full orchestra and some of Britains finest singers as soloists to unaccompanied madrigals; with piano or Military Band.
