Atherstone, Warwickshire.
Atherstone is a small market town with a colourful history, situated on the Roman
Watling Street at the eastern edge of the Warwickshire Forest of Arden, between Tamworth and Nuneaton.
Set against the wooded hills of the Merevale Estate, the picturesque town centre
dates from medieval times and remains unspoiled. The parish church of St Mary's
dominates Atherstone market square where the market is held twice a week on
Tuesdays and Fridays. Atherstone is perhaps best known for its once hat making
industry and its annual "Atherstone Ball Game" which takes place every
Shrove Tuesday.
